California Revival Knits
Remember I said I had a treat in store for you? Well, today I'm delighted to be hosting a stop on Stephannie Tallent's California Revival Knits blog tour! Of course there'll be a giveaway, but more of that later.
Any book inspired by the Mission, Spanish Colonial and Spanish Revival architecture of California is bound to make me sit up and listen, as it immediately brings to mind the wildly colourful images of its signature style - tiles, stucco and wrought iron and... sun! Stephannie obviously spent plenty of time researching her sources as you can see here in the interesting pics of the artisans at work in the factory.
So what's on the page for the knitter? Well a quick tot up reveals two sweaters, two cowls, two tams, two pairs of socks, four pairs of fingerless gloves, a shawl, a cushion, and a pair of cosy mittens. Techniques covered are lace, intarsia, fairisle, beadwork, picot edging and twisted stitches and Stephannie generously includes a section on her design process - the creative road travelled from Spanish tile to fingerless knitted glove.
Beautiful images show off the designs to great advantage both from an aesthetic angle and from the knitter's perspective. The charts are clear and also add a colourful splash within the patterns.

So these are my faves, but there are lots of other goodies in there too. If you can't wait to see the rest you'll just have to get yourself a copy - you can order from Co-operative Press right now, either print or digital. Co-operative Press and Stephannie Tallent have been kind enough to donate one for me to give away. So if you're feeling lucky, all you have to do is leave a comment below, telling me why you'd like to visit, or what you like best about California and I'll be randomly drawing a winner next Monday, 14th May.
Next on the blog tour is the lovely Ann Kingstone, and if you'd like to follow the rest of the tour, here are the other stops:

Being from the East Coast of America, I love the completely different ethnic, climactic and botanical culture of California; it's like visiting a different country!
ReplyDeleteWhat a super looking collection. Why would I like to visit California? - to run the Big Sur marathon along Highway One! It's on my dream marathon list.
ReplyDeleteI would love to visit my Aunt & Uncle that live on the northern California coast. Looks like a great book. thanks!
ReplyDeleteOh, my goodness! I love the look of this book, too. I would so love to visit several of my cousins in CA. And a best good friend up north. Maybe someday! Thanks for the opportunity to enter!
ReplyDeleteIf I were going to visit California, I check out the town where we lived when I was 5: Cayucos. In the mid 60's my could afford to rent a beach-front house on my father's income as an instructor at Cal Poly. Hard to imagine that today!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful book! I would love to revisit California to go to Monterey Bay Aquarium again. The best way to see the marine wildlife of the Pacific coast.
ReplyDeleteI visited CA for the first time last year and LOVED the weather, not as humid as TX.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful book filled with gorgeous patterns!
ReplyDeleteI've never been to California, but if I was going, I'd want to visit San Francisco, more specifically the Village and Chinatown.
Thank you for hosting the giveaway!

ReplyDeleteI'm a transplanted fifth generation Californian and I miss it; so I need this book.
California is my birthplace and I miss its many treasures I pray to win as I cannot afford to purchase. Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteWow,.... love what you showed us in the book, gorgeous! Really love the California weather, gives you more time to spend outdoors enjoying nature :-). Think I need to make a trip out there this summer to enjoy all California has to offer, and a long overdue visit to my favorite aunt in Pacific Palisades.
ReplyDeleteOh, my.....love that Undersea Garden Cowl....now that I would love to knit!!!

This is a beautiful book! But I will confess that I am not a huge California fan. If I could go on vacation anywhere in CA, then it would have to be north of San Francisco in the wine country. Napa and Sonoma. They are wonderful areas to visit.
ReplyDeleteI love California! I grew up in the Bay Area and I miss it! I was born in New Mexico so I enjoy the Spanish designs you have shown!
ReplyDeleteAs Tony Bennett said in the famous song "I left my heart in San Francisco". We moved there in 1996 and then left for good in 2011 as we drove past the city on our way to the airport for the last time while it felt good to be going home to Australia I cried a lot of tears to be leaving such a wonderful city filled with beautiful architecture and such amazing people. Even now I miss the fog swirling in around 4pm on a Summer's day standing on the top of Powell and California Streets. Yep part of my heart will always be tied up in that city by the bay
ReplyDeleteI would like to visit "wine country" in California (I want to visit wine country every where I go) most of all. It looks beautiful in the pictures and movies I've seen.
ReplyDeleteI have lived in Southern California for most of my life now, but my favorite thing about California is Northern California-- the cool, misty coast, the redwoods, the quirkiness of San Francisco... you get the idea. :)
ReplyDeleteCalifornia?! A no-brainer for me: diving in the kelp forests and with the sea otters. A dream holiday for a very long time...
ReplyDeleteHi Jean - almost got there in 2008, but only saw the airport!
ReplyDeleteThe places I'd most like to see in California are the part of the coast they call 'Big Sur' (looks spectacular)...and also the Getty Museum & the Getty Villa (love my art!)...
Thanks for your blog, warm regards, Carson McFarlane
When my son was in graduate school in Santa Barbara I would always visit in February. My favorite place to go was to a eucalyptus grove about a half mile from his house where monarch butterflies wintered over. It was a magic place.
